Nigel holds an MA degree from Oxford University in Classics and Philosophy. After Oxford, he trained as a Solicitor and qualified as a Solicitor in 1978
In his long career, he has practised in Civil Litigation, Family Law and Criminal Law but from the 1990s has specialised in Civil Litigation.
He was the lead Solicitor in a large multi-party action on behalf of over 100 patients suing their former dentist in a case which came to be reported as Appleton and Others – v – Garrett [1997] 8 Med L.R .75 which was the first case to establish the right to aggravated damages in a clinical negligence claim.
He continues to practise in a wide range of Civil Litigation including contentious probate and estate litigation.
He has over many years campaigned against the policy of removing Legal Aid in large areas of Civil Litigation and campaigned against the closure of local Courts.
